Thank you for your reporting of the Oklahoma Greens' press release regarding their endorsement of Senator Bernard Sanders for the Democratic primary election there. The press release and your article have caused some controversy and consternation among Greens and their allies in social media. Some Green stalwarts assert that the state party has no business telling anyone how to vote in major-party primaries, whether or not the Oklahoma Green Party is likely to achieve ballot access in 2016. Others see pragmatic wisdom in the announcement. I am merely grateful that the press release acknowledges how Sanders falls short of embodying the Green Movement's Key Values.
There is a factual error that concerns me in this article posted Monday on WTUL's website. This sentence should be corrected forthwith:
Environmental Activist Jill Stein is the current Green Party candidate.
Here are the relevant facts on which you might base a correction:
You can find more information about the Greens' nomination process here.
- * There are currently at least five candidates (two recognized) vying for the Green Party's presidential nomination: Jill Stein, William Kreml, SKCM Curry, Kent Mesplay, Darryl Cherney. Recognition requires approval by a minimum number of Green Party members nationwide. (The GP website does not feature them in any easily accessible location.) There are others listed here.
- * The nominee will not be selected officially until the party's convention in August.
- * Dr. Stein did win the nomination in 2012, and, given her organization and funding, quite likely will again in 2016. However, most Greens with whom I have spoken would prefer that nobody presume anything regarding the eventual nomination. Dr. Stein herself is frequently careful to have herself introduced in appearances as a Green presidential candidate, not the candidate.
- * There is still the possibility that the Green Convention's delegates will choose not to nominate anybody for president, because None of the Above is always an option in the nomination process for any public office.
Thank you again. I would appreciate it if you could reply when you have made the correction or decided, for whatever reasons, not to.

Former Co-Chair, Harris County (TX) Green Party
